BELTON – University of Mary Hardin-Baylor football players Cody Jones and Chad Peevey both claimed American Southwest Conference Player of the Week honors for their performances in the Cru’s 56-30 victory over Mississippi College on Saturday. Jones was named ASC Defensive Player of the Week and Peevey took ASC Special Teams Player of the Week honors for the second time this season.
Jones, a senior free safety from Hughes Springs High School, recorded a team-high nine tackles, all of them solo stops. He also intercepted two passes and added a tackle for loss to lead the Cru defensive effort.
Peevey, a senior punter/kicker from St. Joseph High School in Bryan, averaged 56.7 yards per punt on three punts with a long boot of 73 yards. He put two of those three kicks inside the Choctaw’s 20-yard line. Peevey also recorded six touchbacks on his nine kickoffs in the game.
UMHB closed out a fourth consecutive perfect regular season at 10-0 overall and 6-0 in ASC play. The Cru clinched the outright ASC title with the victory and the team has now won 44 consecutive regular season games and 32 straight ASC contests. UMHB will advance to the NCAA Division III National Championships and will find out its First Round opponent and game site when the 32-team field is announced at 5:00 PM on Sunday.
