Belton – University of Mary Hardin-Baylor football players Michael Carpenter and Brodrick Crain both claimed American Southwest Conference Player of the Week honors for their performance in the Cru’s 40-18 win over Sul Ross State on Saturday. Carpenter took ASC Offensive Player of the Week and Crain was named ASC Defensive Player of the Week.
Carpenter, a sophomore running back from Bosqueville High School, made the most of his first collegiate start. Carpenter ran for a career-high 140 yards and a touchdown on 28 carries and he added three receptions for 60 yards and another score. He was starting in place of injured starter Elijah Hudson.
Crain, a senior cornerback from Belton High School, recorded nine total tackles including seven solo stops. He also forced a fumble and returned it for a touchdown, intercepted a pass and broke up another to lead the UMHB defensive effort.
The Cru is now 4-0 overall and 1-0 in ASC play on the season. UMHB is ranked #2 in the country by the American Football Coaches Association and #3 in the nation by D3football.com. The Cru will return to action with a 6:00 PM home non-conference game against Trinity University (3-1) this Saturday at Crusader Stadium.
