BLACKWATER DRAW, N.M. – Tarleton State quarterback Jake Fenske passed for a season-high 313 yards and three touchdowns to help lead the No. 22-ranked Texans to a 34-14 win over Eastern New Mexico in Lone Star Conference play Saturday afternoon at Greyhound Stadium in Blackwater Draw, N.M.
The Texans (4-0, 3-0 LSC) gave up an early touchdown to the Greyhounds (1-3, 0-1 LSC), but it was all Tarleton after that as the Texan defense forced four first half turnovers and the offense managed to rack up 398 yards of total offense on the day.
Fenske had a season-high 27 completions and tallied a career-high 50- passing attempts in the contest as well. His 50 pass attempts were the most since Aaron Doyle attempted 52 passes against Abilene Christian last season.
Jeken Frye tied a career-high on Saturday as he pulled in two touchdown passes from Fenske and tallied 57 receiving yards as well. Andre Plata led the Texans with 70 yards receiving, while Clifton Rhodes III caught a game-high seven catches for 68 yards and a touchdown.
The Texans open the season with four straight wins away from Tarleton Memorial Stadium for the first time in school history and extend its win streak to seven straight games dating back to last season. Tarleton has also won seven straight road contests dating back to last season as well.
Saturday’s win now sets up a highly anticipated match-up with No. 4-ranked West Texas A&M next Saturday in Stephenville. The Buffs, who won 72-0 over Central State on Saturday, are 5-0 on the season and 2-0 in LSC play. The Texans and Buffs are scheduled to kickoff at 7 p.m. next Saturday at Tarleton Memorial Stadium.
