BELTON – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor women’s volleyball team swept American Southwest Conference matches at home, earning a pair of 3-1 victories over Mississippi College and the University of Texas at Tyler.
The Cru improves to 26-5 on the season and finishes the American Southwest Conference season at 15-3.
Mississippi College jumped to an early 1-0 lead after a 25-23 first-set win. UMHB responded with three consecutive set victories at 25-20, 25-15 and 25-12 to take the match 3-1. Lauren Powell led the Cru with 15 kills in the match while Cheyenne Dowdey and Katrina Kastmo each added seven. Kendall Pye assisted 22 kills with Shelby Prather adding 11. Defensively, Dowdey’s nine blocks was enough to break the UMHB Division III era record for blocks in a season, previously held by Christi Baetz (143, 2000). Kendra Feldmann led the Cru with 21 digs en route to a team-total 68. UMHB totaled 45 kills for a .238 hitting percentage in the match.
UMHB jumped to an early 2-0 lead on U.T.-Tyler with a pair of 25-21 victories over the Patriots. U.T.-Tyler took the third set 25-21 over the Cru before UMHB responded with a 25-23 fourth-set victory to take the match 3-1. Powell and Bianca Patterson both led the Cru with 11 kills while Pye added 10. Prather had 19 assists while Pye added 13. Feldmann again led the Cru 27 digs. Dowdey extended her school-record blocks with eight blocks en route to a team-total 15 blocks.
The Cru will return to action next weekend in a 5 p.m. match Friday against Schreiner University on the campus of Southwestern University in Georgetown. The Cru will compete as the No. 2 seed in the American Southwest Conference Tournament at the University of Texas at Dallas Nov. 7-9.
