WACO – The McLennan Highlanders defeated the Angelina Roadrunners 84-78 Tuesday night at The Highlands.
The teams kept it close for the first 11 minutes of play. McLennan led 19-16 with 8:49 to play in the first half. The Highlanders used a 9-0 run to take the 28-16 with just over six minutes on the clock. The Roadrunners cut the lead to seven less than two minutes later but McLennan ended the half on an 11-3 run to take the 41-27 advantage into the break.
Angelina started the second half on fire, cutting the lead to six at 45-39 with 16:41 to play in the game. The Highlanders increased the lead to 12 with just over eight minutes to play. The Roadrunners pulled within four, 73-69, with 4:11 remaining on the clock. Jalen Jones put the Highlanders up by seven with a three-point play on the next possession and the team combined to go 8-12 from the free throw line in the final minutes to seal the win.
Sophomore D.J. Weathers led McLennan with 17 points. Sophomore Joe Lundy and freshman Jalen Jones added 12 and 11, respectively. Freshman Ojai Black and sophomore Shawn Prudhomme scored 10 points each.
The Highlanders return to action on Friday, facing Jacksonville at 5:30 p.m. in the Joe White Classic at Hill College.
