TEMPLE – The annual Chisholm Trail Classic girls basketball tournament tips off today at Wildcat Gym in Temple with twelve teams on the court through Saturday.

Belton opens the tournament against Pflugerville Connally at 10 a.m.  Belton head coach Brenda Gomez says she has transformed the program into one where players want to be a part of and work hard in her third year at the helm of the Lady Tigers (1-0).

“It’s night and day from where we were when I got here,” she told the Temple Daily Telegram, “I don’t know that I’ve had to convince someone that this is fun. It is extremely hard work, but these kids have bought into it, they believe it with their heart.”

Belton returns four varsity players and only two starters from a team that went 10-24 last season.  Senior Emily Hugo is expected to be one of the leaders for the Lady Tigers this season, even after suffering an ACL injury this past summer and freshman Cammie Moore will bring energy and confidence into the season.

Belton opened the season with with a 47-39 win at Waco Connally on Tuesday night.

Temple will open the Chisholm Trail Classic against Hutto at 1 p.m. at Wildcat Gym.  The Tem-cats lost three of their top scorers from a 26-9 playoff team from a year ago, but return two all-district performers Jazzmen Ortiz and Tyesha Taylor.  Sixth-year head coach Tamarah Sanders  says expectations are high for this year’s team.

“Our expectations will always be the same, they’re going to be high”, Sanders told the Temple Daily Telegram, “We want to make sure we’re on of those top four teams that make the playoffs, We want to win some games in the playoffs and just try to go as far as we can.”

Temple tipped off their season with a 59-39 loss at Round Rock Stony Point on Tuesday night.
