LORENA – The Copperas Cove Lady Dawgs came out shooting three-pointers and established an inside presence early rolling to a 65-40 win over Class 3A No. 5 Lorena on Tuesday night.

Cove junior guard Angel Mullen had the hot hand for the Lady Dawgs hitting three baskets from beyond the arc in the first quarter for a 20-7 lead over the Lady Leopards (6-1).

“Angel Mullen had a real good game,” said Lady Bulldawgs head coach Eldridge McAdams, “she came out hot, shooting that ball pretty good and she orchestrated the game.”

Mullen led all Cove scorers with 14 points, senior post Bryanea Hall added 11 and senior guard Britanny Gamble had 10.

“I thought we looked good, I thought we did some good things,” said Coach McAdams, “I saw a lot of good ball movement, hitting the open shooter.”

Lorena was led by senior guard Ashlyn Bell, who led all scorers with 16 points, but no other Lady Leopards scored in double digits as they were handed their first loss of the season.

“Lorena always got good shooters,” said Coach McAdams, “so I just told them (team), we’ve got to keep answering everything that they do, because they’re going to get hot and hit some threes.”

The Lady Dawgs tune-up for district play with a tournament in Georgetown this weekend before traveling to Killeen for their District 8-5A opener against the Lady Roos at 7 p.m.

In boys action on Monday night, the Bulldawgs posted a 66-63 road win over Class 4A No. 14 Austin LBJ. Rashard Odomes poured in 30 points to lead Copperas Cove (4-6) in the win. The Dawgs play at Austin Westlake on Friday with a 7 p.m. tipoff.
