Austin, TX – Calveion Landrum scored 23 points to lead top-ranked La Vega to a perfect season with a 47-42 win over No. 2 Argyle and the school’s first girls basketball state title on Saturday at the Frank Erwin Center in Austin.
The sophomore guard scored 15 of the team’s 24 first half points to keep the Lady Pirates (35-0) in the game.
Junior Erin DeGrate shook off a poor shooting first half and finished with 12 points while adding 12 rebounds for La Vega.
La Vega head coach Amy Gillum, an alum of both the school and the program, said postgame that the reality of becoming just the 19th girls basketball program to go undefeated in UIL history still hadn’t sunk in.
“This was a new obstacle for us,” Gillum said. “Our preseason schedule prepared us for this. We kept our composure, we buckled down and we took care of business. I’m just grateful to be part of history, and I couldn’t have done it with a better group.”
The Lady Pirates have only three seniors on the roster. The entire starting lineup are underclassman and the future looks bright for La Vega.
