WACO – Troy knocked off Salado 1-0 in a one-game series at Waco ISD Sports Complex on Friday to advance to the 2A state semifinal at Dell Diamond in Round Rock.
The game featured a pitching duel of Troy’s Zach Epperson and Salado’s Casey Frazier.
Trojans senior pitcher Epperson shut out the Eagles, giving up only two hits with seven strikeouts and five walks, to lead the Trojans to their second appearance in the state tournament, first since 1983.
“(This means) everything. It feels great,” Epperson told WacoTrib.com. “I’ve never been this far before. It feels good to come back and beat the same team that beat us last year to go to state.”
Eagles senior pitcher Frazier only gave up one unearned run on two hits with eight strikeouts in the loss.
The only run of the game came in the fifth inning on Elijah Saldana’s infield single that scored Bryce Harrimon from second base. The throw to first glanced off the first baseman’s glove toward second.
The same two teams met in the regional final in 2013 with Salado winning two of three games and advancing to the state semifinals.
Troy’s opponent at the state tournament will be determined by the UIL when all 4 region champions are crowned. The Trojans will play at 4:00 pm or 7:00 pm on Wednesday at the Dell Diamond in Round Rock.
