BELTON – The 2014 University of Mary Hardin-Baylor football team has picked up another top ten preseason ranking as preseason college football magazines continue to trickle out. The Cru is picked sixth in the country in the Lindy’s Sports 2014 College Football Preview Magazine.
The ranking is the lowest of the preseason so far for UMHB, following a #2 ranking from USA Today Sports and a #4 ranking from Sporting News. Lindy’s picks defending national champion Wisconsin-Whitewater to repeat and Mount Union is picked #2 by the magazine. Linfield College, Bethel College and Wesley College round out the top five ahead of the Cru. Two of UMHB’s 2014 opponents are also ranked by the magazine, University of Redlands comes in at #11 and Millsaps College is ranked 20th by Lindy’s Sports. The Cru’s season opener at Millsaps is also picked as one of the five biggest games of the regular season by the publication.
Lindy’s Magazine picks two Preseason All-American Teams and the Cru did not have a player selected. Three American Southwest Conference players were named to the Preseason All-American Teams. Mississippi College linebacker Jake Weddle was also selected, even though the Choctaws are no longer competing in NCAA Division III after transitioning to NCAA Division II over the summer.
The Cru went 13-1 overall and won the ASC Championship with a 6-0 league mark in 2013. UMHB advanced to the Semifinals of the NCAA Division III National Championships before falling 16-15 to Wisconsin-Whitewater. The Cru was ranked #2 in the country by D3football.com last season and was #3 in the nation in the final American Football Coaches’ Association Top 25 Poll. UMHB will open the 2014 season with a 6:00 PM kickoff at Millsaps College on September 6th in Jackson, Mississippi.
