STEPHENVILLE – Tarleton State checked in at No. 3 in the women’s preseason standings and No. 4 in the men’s rankings when the Lone Star Conference preseason cross country polls Thursday.
“We’ll certainly use this as motivation this season,” said Tarleton head coach Pat Ponder.
Tarleton’s women are coming off the best season in school history as they became the first Tarleton cross country team to qualify for the national championships. The TexAnns finished 24th at the national meet and return three all-conference runners including the LSC Newcomer of the Year, Aly Coughlin, and the LSC Freshman of the Year, Audrey Shelton.
West Texas A&M claimed the top spot in the women’s conference poll with 120 votes and 16 first-place nods while Midwestern State took second with 105 and two first-place votes.
Tarleton was in third with 86 votes while Eastern New Mexico (70), Angelo State (56), Texas A&M-Commerce (45) and Texas A&M-Kingsville (22) rounding out the rankings.
On the men’s side, West Texas A&M again took top honors with 109 votes and 13 first-place decisions while Texas A&M-Commerce checked in at second with 86 votes.
Eastern New Mexico was six votes ahead of Tarleton with 82 votes to the Texans’ 76. The Greyhounds had two first-place votes while the Texans had one.
Cameron (56), Angelo State (48) and Texas A&M-Kingsville (19) rounded out the men’s poll.
