CORSICANA – Navarro volleyball, brimming with confidence from its bullet-train season start, rocked 15th-ranked Hill College in straight games Tuesday in the same manner that the Wolens Special Events Center rocked during the home-opening contest.
Bulldog volleyball won its fifth straight match by counts of 26-24, 25-19, 25-19 in front of a large crowd that turned Navarro’s arena and home court advantage into a ‘pit’ for visitors. The festive, supportive gathering included the Navarro Pep Band, Cheerleaders, Student Government Association members, athletic teams and students and community members with signs, painted faces, boomsticks and other positive displays of good spirit.
Here during the final week of August, NC volleyball’s best start in years now is within one victory of matching its entire win total from the 2013 season. Coach Kasey McBrearty’s Bulldogs have won 4 of their matches in straight games, and they are riding a large wave of momentum from straight-game victories over two Top-20 ranked teams in the NJCAA Division I Preseason Poll (No. 20 Temple and the Lady Rebels).
Tuesday, they rallied to win their first two games. Game 1 was tied on 10 occasions. Navarro rallied from an 18-13 deficit with a 10-2 run and went ahead 23-20. Hill bounced back for ties at 23 and 24, but the Bulldogs refused to relent. In Game 2, the Bulldogs fell behind by 5 (12-7), but evened the score at 18. Then, NC claimed a commanding edge by winning the final seven points.
In Game 3, Navarro last trailed at 3-2. A point run gave them a 9-4 lead, and they later expanded it to 20-13.
Navarro next competes in the two-day Applebee’s Classic hosted by Blinn College in Brenham.
On Friday, the Bulldogs will meet Eastern Arizona College’s Lady (Gila) Monsters at 9 am, and then face off against 17th-ranked New Mexico Military Institute (2-2) at 5 pm. On Saturday, NC draws Yavapai CC, Az., (3-1) at 11 am, and gets the opportunity to face host Blinn at 7 pm in the finale.
