RICHARDSON – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor volleyball team swept a pair of matches at the U.T.-Dallas Labor Day Tournament to open the season at 2-0.
UMHB opened the tournament with a five-set match over Southwestern University. UMHB fell 28-26 in the first set, but responded with a pair wins, beating the Pirates 25-20, 25-19 to take a 3-1 lead. Southwestern responded with a 25-21 fourth set over the Cru before UMHB sealed the win with a 15-13 win in the final set. Cheyenne Dowdey led the Cru with 14 kills, hitting .414 in the contest. Lauren Powell and Abby Voskuil each added 13 kills while Bianca Patterson put down 11 and Kendall Pye added ten. Shelby Prather led the Cru with 38 assists, followed by 22 from Pye. Defensively, Kendra Feldmann led all athletes with 28 digs while Voskuil added 21. Natasha Evans recorded one solo block and four block assists, helping the Cru to a team-total nine.
UMHB faced the University of Dallas in the second match of the day, earning a three-set sweep 25-13, 25-16, 25-18. Patterson led the Cru with nine kills while Voskuil and Dowdey each added five. Pye assisted on 17 kills with Prather helping out on 12. Kendra Feldmann led all athletes with 14 digs while Dowdey had five block assists. UMHB totaled 32 kills in the match for a .207 attack percentage.
The Cru will return to action Saturday, August 30th in a 10 a.m. match against Trinity on the campus of U.T.-Dallas.
