RICHARDSON – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor volleyball team handed No. 13 Trinity its first loss of the season Saturday, beating the Tigers 3-1 at the U.T.-Dallas Labor Day Tournament in Richardson. UMHB advances to 3-0 on the season while the Tigers move to 2-1.
The Cru grabbed an early advantage, taking the first set 25-16 before Trinity responded with a fight in the second, evening the match at 1-1 with a 26-24 decision. UMHB then responded with two consecutive set wins at 25-19, 25-16 to seal the win over the Tigers. Abby Voskuil led the Cru with 14 kills while Bianca Patterson added 12 and Lauren Powell had 11. Shelby Prather led the Cru with 42 assists while Voskuil served four aces. Defensively, Lauren Powell led UMHB with 20 digs with Kendra Feldmann adding 18 and Nathasha Evans recording 15. UMHB had eight team blocks in the match, led by Cheyenne Dowdey’s two solo blocks and three block assists. UMHB totaled 56 kills for a .237 hitting percentage while Trinity totaled 48 kills for a .181 hitting percentage.
UMHB returns to action next weekend at the Cal Lu Fornia Invitational on the campus of California Lutheran University in Thousand Oaks, Calif. The Cru will play four matches in the tournament, opening with a 3 p.m. (Pacific Time) match against host California Lutheran on Friday, September 5th.
