UMHB Men’s Soccer beats Austin College 4-1

BELTON – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor men’s soccer team grabbed its first win of the season Friday in a 4-1 win over Austin College. The win improved the Cru to 1-2-0 on the season while the Roos fell to 0-2-1.  
Oliver Ortiz gave UMHB an early lead in the 12th minute off a double assist from Ben Hammonds and McKenna Cook. Case Carnes scored his first collegiate goal in the 41stminute, giving UMHB a 2-0 advantage heading into halftime. Caleb Latson was the next Crusader to strike, scoring his first goal for UMHB in the 59th minute off an assist from Ortiz. Garrett Matacale got the Roos on the board in the 68th minute, cutting UMHB’s lead to two before Jorge Marquez converted a penalty kick in the 76th minute to increase the UMHB lead to three once again.
Oliver Ortiz, the Schlotzsky’s Lotz Better Player of the Game, led the Cru with three shots while Ben Hammonds and Nate Fagnant each added two. Javier Zaragoza earned his first win in the net for UMHB, allowing one goal and saving two. UMHB took five corner kicks in the match and limited the Roos to just one. UMHB totaled 12 shots while the Roos recorded five.
The Cru returns to action tomorrow in a 7:30 p.m. match against McMurry University in Belton.
