Amy Rosenbaum’s career-high 54 assists paced Baylor’s (5-2) .268 hitting percentage and Andie Malloy led the visitors with 19 kills. UT Arlington (7-2) hit .213 in the loss, and former Copperas Cove standout Qiana Canete had a double-double with 19 kills and 10 digs in the losing effort.
“The issues came in the first three sets where we didn’t start passing well and had to fight back in the sets,” said Baylor head coach Jim Barnes. “We talked about doing those well, and in the fourth set we came out and served tough and passed well. If we do that at a high level to start the match, we’ll be able to put it on teams, so it was nice to see us put a whole set together in the last set.
After taking set one, Baylor trailed 7-1 to set two, but marched all the way back and held off the Mavs to take set two. After hitting just .049 in set three and dropping the set, Baylor built an 11-4 start in the final set and never looked back.
Baylor heads to Washington, D.C. and will play Illinois State (11 a.m. CDT) and George Washington (6 p.m., CDT) Friday and Columbia (11 a.m. CDT) Saturday.
