baylorequestrianWACO – The No. 6 Baylor equestrian team used a 10-6 win over Fresno State and a 14-1 win over No. 10 SMU to take home its sixth-consecutive Willis Invitational title Saturday at the Willis Family Equestrian Center.

BU and FSU began its matchup Friday evening with Baylor leading 5-3 after equitation of the flat and reining. Then, the Bears took a 3-1 win in equitation over fences and tied with the Bulldogs in reining 2-2.

In the final matchup of the round robin, Baylor dominated the No. 10-ranked Mustangs with its only loss coming in flat.

In the round-robin setup only one team out of UT Martin, FSU, SMU and the Bears can gain a win for the 2014-15 season, and BU begins the season 1-0 after taking down all three teams.

SMU defeated UT Martin in a tiebreaker, Saturday, and FSU beat the Skyhawks in round three. UT Martin left Waco losing all three matchups, Fresno State was 2-1 and SMU 1-2 on the weekend. All three teams will begin the season with a 0-1 record.

Baylor took all eight MOP honors in rounds two and three in wins over Fresno State and SMU.  Alicia Gasser and Sam Schaefer won MOP’s in BU’s win over SMU in flat and fences, respectively.  Lacy Watson won her first career MOP in horsemanship vs. the Mustangs and Mary Brown earned MOP honors in reining.  Paige Parker won MOP honors in flat vs. FSU while newcomer Brittney Mirkov won her first career MOP in fences vs. the Bulldogs.  Brown picked up her second MOP honor of the weekend in horsemanship vs. FSU and Elizabeth Shank won her first MOP in reining.

“I am happy we got a chance to put some freshmen in. I liked the way they really stepped up to the plate, and they really did a good job,” Baylor Head Coach Ellen White on the Bears’ newcomers performing well.  “We really have a lot of people pushing, which is such a great competition to have internally on our team. I think we have some tougher teams coming up, but bring it on. We can do it.”

Baylor begins Big 12 play with Oklahoma State at home Oct. 18.
