TYLER – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor men’s tennis team opened main draw play at the ITA Southwest Regional Tournament Saturday morning in Tyler.
In flight “A” singles play for UMHB, Scott Wilding opened with a 7-6(4), 6-3 loss to Trinity’s Alvaro Hobbs. The Cru’s Mark Johnson fell to Trinity’s Eliot Guin by a 6-3, 6-4 score.Brendan Thompson lost a 6-1, 6-4 decision to 11th-seeded Frankie Fischer of U.T.-Tyler. Jake Stamps posted a 6-3, 6-4 win over Schreiner’s Austin Carrola before losing to Southwestern’s Nick Snovely 6-4, 6-3 in the second round.
In flight “A” consolation, Wilding beat Howard Payne’s Edgar Torres 6-4, 6-0 and then won in a walkover to move into the quarterfinals. Johnson posted a 1-6, 6-2, 10-6 win over U.T.-Tyler’s Cameron McCarthy. Thompson fell to Tyler Tolopka of ETBU 7-5, 6-1.
In flight “B” singles, Brandon Adkins lost to Jacob Organ of University of the Ozarks 6-1, 6-4. Tevin Ogo lost to Hendrix College’s Ian McVinney 6-0, 6-0. Bright Ihezue lost to Austin College’s Preston Glasscock 6-1, 6-1. John Martin topped Hardin-Simmons’ Andrew Eurek 6-2, 6-2 and then beat Laramie Linn of ETBU 6-3, 6-4. T.J. Kittrell lost to ETBU’s Jonathan Castan 6-0, 6-2 and Chase Mikulenak lost to Trinity’s Austin Crist 6-0, 6-0.
In flight “B” consolation, Adkins fell to Austin College’s Ben Boerner 3-6, 6-4, 12-10. Ogo lost to Schreiner’s Michael Holder 6-0, 4-6, 10-4. Ihezue dropped a 6-1, 7-5 decision to Chandler Livingston of Hardin-Simmons. Kittrell lost to Nick Ashburn of Austin College 6-2, 6-4 and Mikulenak lost to Schreiner’s Coby Velez 6-0, 6-3.
In flight “A” doubles, Thompson and Johnson teamed for an 8-6 victory over Tolopka and Longoria of ETBU before falling to Dunn and Diaz Boom of Trinity 8-3 in the second round. Ogo and Wilding opened with an 8-1 loss to Beggs and Weaver of LeTourneau.
In flight “B” doubles, Stamps and Adkins opened with an 8-5 win over Livingston and Farmakis of Hardin-Simmons and then beat U.T.-Dallas’ Norris and Kuhn 8-6 in the second round. Martin and Kittrell opened with an 8-1 win over Kubena and Morgan of Austin College before topping ETBU’s Linn and Mason 8-6 in the second round. Those two UMHB teams will now meet in the quarterfinals. Ihezue and Mikulenak lost to Garimella and Lenser of Hendrix College 8-5 in the opening round.
The tournament runs through Sunday night and is being hosted by the University of Texas at Tyler. The ITA Southwest Regional also closes out the fall schedule for the Cru men’s tennis team.
