STEPHENVILLE – The Tarleton State volleyball team got back in the win column with a bang Friday night as the TexAnns (11-4, 5-3) swept the Angelo State Rambelles (11-3, 6-2) for the first time since 2006.
Tarleton’s last sweep of Angelo State came in Stephenville on Oct. 14, 2006 and, overall in the series, this is the second straight win over the Rambelles dating back to last season’s regular season finale in which the TexAnns rallied back in an epic five-set thriller.
The opening set started in a dead heat with a 16-16 tie over the first 32 points before a service error from Angelo State started a 9-6 advantage down the stretch for the TexAnns. The Rambelles managed to get it back to 22-22 but a kill from Kaitlyn White was the first of three straight – an Angelo error and anAyssa Garcia service ace – to seal the game for Tarleton.
Covell served up the next four points on three Angelo errors and a block fromJasmyne Brown and Kelsey Raglin to lead 15-10. After the Belles added one point, Roberts struck again to start another quick TexAnn push that extended the lead to 19-11.
Tarleton kept Angelo from scoring consecutive points any time after the 10-10 tie to start the game and went on to cruise to a 25-16 victory in set two.
The third set started out all Tarleton over the first eight points as the TexAnns built a quick 7-1 lead, forcing Angelo State to burn both of their timeouts of the third set after the initial eight points. Out of the second timeout, Angelo battled back to take a 21-18 lead over the TexAnns.
However, the TexAnns continued to fight and got a kill from Alexander, which started a 4-0 Tarleton run to give the TexAnns the lead back at 22-21.
After Angelo State got to game point at 24-22, Tarleton pushed right back with a kill from Raglin and a block from Alexander and Roberts to even the set at 24-24 and force extra points. The teams switched the advantage three times before a service error and a solo block from Brown ended the match, 30-28, in three for Tarleton.
As a team, Tarleton hit just .119 but the TexAnn defense held Angelo State to a .016 hitting percentage, including a (-).130 percentage in the third set.
Roberts led the team with 13 kills and a .276 hitting percentage while Alexander landed eight kills to go along with nine blocks. Roberts also had a team-high three aces and recorded her team-leading eighth double-double of the season.
Tarleton will be back in action Saturday afternoon in Wisdom Gym when they host Heartland Conference foe, Newman at 2:30 p.m.
