PORT ARTHUR – The 18th-ranked Navarro Bulldogs rallied from a first-game loss to dispose of the Lamar State College-Port Arthur Seahawks 3-1 Wednesday night at the Carl Parker Multipurpose Center.

With the four-game win, coach Kasey McBrearty’s Bulldogs (23-5/5-3) claimed a berth in the Region XIV Volleyball Tournament Championship scheduled November 7-9 at Lee College’s Sports Arena in Baytown.

The aggressive Bulldogs won their fourth straight match and fifth in their last six as they nailed down one of the four tournament berths accorded East Zone members.

NC swept the Seahawks in Corsicana in September, but LSC-PA surprised them Wednesday in Game 1.  The Seahawks rallied from a five-point deficit, and, finally, from a 24-21 disadvantage to score a 26-24 win.

Navarro grabbed momentum early in Game 2, and never let it go during wins of 25-15, 25-19 and 25-16 to disappoint a home crowd of some 200 spectators.

“They (Navarro) don’t let a ball die,” LSC-PA first-year coach Jessica Callahan said after the match. “When you’re pounding and going hard at a team, and they just keep bringing it back and bringing it back, it’s exhausting….I felt like we hung with them…”

Navarro hosts the fourth-ranked, zone-leading Tyler Apache Ladies on Saturday afternoon in their final regular-season home match.  The Bulldogs will close zone play next Wednesday at Carthage against Panola.
