STEPHENVILLE (TheFlash.Today) – Stephenville dominated early then overcame a slew of mistakes in the third to sweep away Brownwood in the Honeybees’ District 6-4A finale Tuesday night at Gandy Gym.
Kaleigh Conger landed the match-winning kill shot to cap Stephenville’s big third-set comeback, the only drama in the otherwise lopsided 25-13, 25-8, 26-24 victory.
The Bees trailed by as many as eight in the third set, but Conger landed a pair of kills to help right the ship, while Brownwood couldn’t overcome five penalties for stepping in or under the net. Stephenville trailed 8-4 early in the set, evened it up briefly at 9-9, then made a slew of errors that pushed Brownwood ahead 17-10.
That’s when Conger took over, and Brownwood began to crumble. When Conger wasn’t landing kill shots, she was serving while Nicona Stilwell and Mikayla Hobbs scored up front.
The Bees were far more intense and cruised through the opening two sets, outscoring the Lady Lions 50-21.
Hobbs landed eight kills and aced two serves while Conger also had eight kills. Stilwell added seven, Morgan Gibson six and Kerstin Fredrickson five.
The Bees won 20 of 27 sets in district play, losing only their two matches to Abilene Wylie. As the second seed from 6-4A, they face Burkburnett, the third-place finisher in 5-4A, in the bi-district round of the state playoffs.
