Highlassies, Highlanders open with wins

WACO – The McLennan Highlassies and Highlanders opened the basketball season with back-to-back wins tonight in the McLennan Classic.

In women’s action, the Highlassies defeated the Angelina Lady Roadrunners 70-62. The game was close through the first half with McLennan holding the 38-32 advantage at the break. The Highlassies took the first double-digit lead of the game at 49-38 with 13:04 remaining in the game. Angelina cut the lead to six with just over eight minutes to play but was unable to pull any closer.

Freshman Caylinne Martin led the Highlassies with 14 points. Sophomores Adrienne Drake and Demi Cumby added 13 and 10, respectively.

It was all McLennan in the nightcap as the Highlanders defeated the Southern-Shreveport Jaguars 87-49. The game was tied at 15 midway through the first half. The Highlanders used a 21-5 run over the course of five minutes to extend the lead to 36-20 with five minutes left in the half. McLennan continued to pull away in the second half as the Jaguars struggled to find a rhythm.

Freshman Alex Mills led the Highlanders with 22 points. Sophomores Jeff Beverly and Jalen Jones added 13 and 12, respectively.

Both the Highlassies and Highlanders return to action tomorrow. The women host Kilgore at 6 p.m., followed by the men against Richland at8 p.m.
