BELTON – Two University of Mary Hardin-Baylor football players have been honored with American Southwest Conference Player of the Week honors for their performance in the Cru’s 41-28 victory over Hardin-Simmons University on Saturday. Quarterback Zach Anderson was named Co-Offensive Player of the Week while placekicker Jacob O’Neill claimed Special Teams Player of the Week honors.
Anderson, a junior from Odem High School, tied a UMHB single-game record with four touchdown passes. After starting the day 1-4, Anderson completed his next 15 passes to finish 16-19 for 259 yards and the four scores. That feat had only been accomplished three other times in Cru football history. Anderson shares this week’s honor with Louisiana College running back Devin Sylve.
O’Neill, a junior from Deer Park High School, hit field goals from 23 and 24 yards and went 5-5 on extra points to account for 11 points in the Cru victory. O’Neill also averaged 61.2 yards on his kickoffs and had one touchback.
The UMHB football team is 8-0 overall and 3-0 in ASC play following the victory over the Cowboys. The Cru has sole possession of first place in the ASC and can clinch the league’s automatic bid to the NCAA Division III National Championships with a win this Saturday. UMHB will travel to Brownwood to face Howard Payne University (4-4, 1-2 ASC) in a 1:00 PM kick off on Saturday.
