ABILENE– The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor women’s soccer team dropped a 1-0 match to Howard Payne Thursday afternoon in the opening round of the 2014 American Southwest Conference Women’s Soccer Championship Tournament.Howard Payne improved to 10-7-1 on the season and will advance to the Second Round of the tournament while UMHB ends its season at 9-5-2.
Samantha Mullins gave the Yellow Jackets a lead in the 58th minute, scoring off a header to give Howard Payne the 1-0 lead. Mullins headed in a corner kick from Courtney Turner for the goal. UMHB was not able to score, giving the Yellow Jackets a 1-0 victory.
Kathryn Parker led the Cru with five shots while Briana Hester and Kristen Hoelscher each had three. UMHB outshot the Yellow Jackets 16-13 and took eight corner kicks to Howard Payne’s four.Courtney Craig took the loss in the goal for the Cru, allowing one goal and making two saves. Kelsie Piland earned the win for Howard Payne, making two saves in the shutout.
Howard Payne will advance to play No. 2 U.T.-Tyler on Saturday, November 8th at 2 p.m. UMHB ends its season at 9-5-2 with a 6-1-2 mark in conference play.
