austin__spurs-logoprimary-2015CEDAR PARK – The Austin Spurs defeated the Rio Grande Valley Vipers 134-123 at the SWBC Court at Cedar Park Center Sunday night, extending their winning streak to ten.

The Austin Spurs set the pace early with scoring from JaMychal Green, Josh Davis, and Orlando Johnson giving Austin an 11-5 spread over Rio Grande Valley.  The Vipers stayed close with accurate shooting from behind the arc.  The teams traded baskets, ending a high scoring first quarter with Austin on top 36-30.

Early in the second quarter, the Austin Spurs went on a 10-0 run to extend their lead to 49-35.  Jonathan Simmons forced a Vipers offensive foul at 5:59, however the Vipers responded by scoring eight straight points.  A Simmons steal and dunk would end the Vipers’ run. The Austin Spurs took a 70-58 advantage heading into halftime.

After a Viper basket to start the third, Austin fired back, going on an 8-0 run. Despite multiple three-point field goals by the Vipers, the Austin Spurs were able to maintain distance, leading 103-92 at the end of the third.

Austin’s Orlando Johnson contributed two key shot blocks and two dunks in the fourth period that gave the team momentum.  Sharp shooting from the Vipers kept the team close, but a missed Rio Grande Valley three-point attempt with 30 seconds to go, a foul and pair of free throws by Simmons would seal the victory for Austin.

Austin was led by Orlando Johnson’s season-high 26 points as well as Josh Davis’ season high 19 points.  Bryce Cotton also contributed 26 points to help lift Austin over the Vipers.  Tyrone White paced the Vipers with 23 points.

The Austin Spurs (10-3) travel to Sioux Falls to face the Skyforce Saturday, December 27th at 7:00pm.  The Vipers (5-9) head to Iowa to take on the Energy Tuesday, December 23rd at 7:00pm.
