BELTON – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor men’s basketball team took control of the game in the early going and never let up on the way to an 87-61 victory over LeTourneau University Saturday afternoon in Belton. The Cru improves to 7-3 overall with its fifth consecutive victory. UMHB is now 4-1 in American Southwest Conference play. LeTourneau falls to 4-6 overall and 2-3 in the ASC with the loss.
The Cru opened the game with a 19-9 run to take the lead into double figures just seven minutes into the contest. UMHB would stretch it to as many as 25 points in the first half before settling for a 47-27 lead at halftime. The Yellowjackets never got closer than 20 points in the second half as the Cru continued to pull away.
Justin Gammill led a balanced scoring attack for UMHB with 14 points. Russell Green had 12 points and nine rebounds and Braden Hammond chipped in a career-high 11 for the Cru. Twelve different players scored as UMHB shot 51 percent from the field. The Cru also out rebounded LeTourneau 52-33 in the victory.
Sam Talbert led the Yellowjackets with 18 points, all of them coming on three-pointers. Giovanny Thompson added nine points and a game-high 10 rebounds. LeTourneau shot just 32 percent from the field. The Yellowjackets were 9-33 from beyond the arc but hit just 12-30 from the free-throw line.
The Cru will return to action with a 4:00 PM home game against East Texas Baptist University on Monday. UMHB will then hit the road for ASC games at University of the Ozarks and U.T.-Tyler next Thursday and Saturday.
