BELTON – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor women’s basketball team grabbed a 98-77 win over LeTourneau University Saturday afternoon in Belton. The win improved the Cru to 7-3 on the season and 3-2 in American Southwest Conference action while the YellowJackets fell to 3-7 overall and 1-4 in conference play.
The YellowJackets held a 10-3 lead early before UMHB used a 22-4 run powered by Macy Moore with eight points to lead the contest 25-16. LeTourneau cut the Cru’s lead to seven, but was not able to catch the Cru, giving UMHB a 44-35 lead at the half. The YellowJackets were able to cut UMHB’s lead to six, but the Cru defense held LeTourneau to just nine points in the final six minutes. Taylor Tucker led the Cru with 20 points in the second half, giving the Cru its seventh win of the season.
Moore and Tucker led the Cru with 25 points each while Bridjai Chaney added 16. Kourtney Bevers led the Cru with 10 rebounds and six assists while Tucker had a team-high three steals. UMHB out-rebounded the YellowJackets 54-30 in the match, bringing down 22 offensive rebounds to LeTourneau’s seven. The Cru shot 47.3 percent in the contest, 43.9 percent from beyond the arc and went 68.8 percent from the free-throw line. UMHB forced 18 turnovers and recorded nine steals.
Rebecca Stewart led the YellowJackets with 18 points while Ashley Reed added 16 and Bria Goodman had 11. Ashley Stephens was the leading rebounder with six while Stewart had a team-high five assists. LeTourneau shot 48.5 percent on the game and 50 percent from the free-throw line, forcing 20 turnovers and recording six blocks.
The Cru returns to action Monday, January 5th in a 2 p.m. game against East Texas Baptist University at the Mayborn Campus Center in Belton.
