Highlanders fall to Hill, Highlassies get first conference win

WACO – In a game that came down to the wire, the 23rd-ranked McLennan Highlanders fell to the fifth-ranked Hill Rebels 91-85.

The Highlanders came out running and gunning, building a 20-6 lead with just under 14 minutes to play in the first half. The Rebels rallied, cutting the lead to one at 36-35 with 4:58 to go. McLennan extended the lead to nine but Hill cut it to two at the break, 50-48.

McLennan came out cold in the second half. The Rebels took their first lead of the game on a 3-pointer to start the second half. Hill extended the lead to double digits at 79-69 with 6:54 remaining in the game. McLennan trailed 85-74 with just over four minutes. McLennan rallied, cutting the lead to four at 87-83 with 35.61 seconds to go but was unable to complete the comeback.

Sophomore Jalen Jones led the Highlanders with 21 points and sophomore James Harrison added 14. Freshman Alex Mills and sophomore Jeff Beverly added 13 and 12, respectively.

In women’s action, the McLennan Highlassies picked up their first conference win as they defeated the Hill Lady Rebels 67-63.

The Highlassies once again struggled early on. Hill built a 14-4 lead with 12:15 to play in the first  half. McLennan cut the lead to five several times down the stretch. The Lady Rebels led 35-28 at the half.

Hill increased the lead to 10 at 39-29 early in the second half. McLennan came out on fire and began to rally. The Highlassies took the 44-42 lead, their first since the opening minute of the game, with 11:05 to go. With the game tied at 47, McLennan used a 7-0 run to pull away, 54-47. The Lady Rebels cut the lead to three on a Brittany Johnson 3-pointer with 1:58 to play. The Highlassies extended the lead back to six at the free throw line, 65-59 with 1:06 on the clock and Hill was unable to recover.

Sophomore Re’Elle Miller led the Highlassies with 20 points and sophomore Amani Davis added 11.

McLennan returns to action on Saturday, traveling to Terrell to face Southwestern Christian. The women’s game begins at 2 p.m., followed by the men’s game at 4 p.m.
