BELTON – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor women’s basketball team grabbed a convincing 75-61 win over Sul Ross State University Thursday evening in Belton. The win improved the Cru to 9-7 on the season and 5-6 in American Southwest Conference action while the Lobos fell to 3-12 overall and 2-8 in conference play.
UMHB pulled away early with a game-opening 14-6 run to grab a lead on the Lobos. Sul Ross pulled within four before the Cru used an 8-0 run to distance again. UMHB limited the Lobos to just four points in the final five minutes of the first half, holding a 36-22 lead at halftime. The Cru scored 17 second-chance points in the first half and outscored the Sul Ross bench 15-2. The Lobos were not able to catch the Cru in the second half, cutting the lead to 10 in the final minute of play before the Cru hit four free throws to seal the contest.
Taylor Tucker led the Cru with 13 points while Alyssa Dean added 12 and Kourtney Bevers had 11. Bridjai Chaneybrought down a team-high 16 rebounds, adding nine points and blocking four shots. UMHB outrebounded the Lobos 56-34 in the contest, forcing Sul Ross into 22 turnovers. UMHB shot 33.8 percent in the contest, 22.7 percent from beyond the arc and 83.3 percent from the free throw line with an impressive 20-24 performance.
Desare Allen and Miranda Roberts led the Lobos with 15 points each while Ivette Trujillo added 13. Trujillo was the leading rebounder for Sul Ross, bringing down nine total rebounds and the Lobos’ only four offensive boards. Ashley Ousley recorded a team-high eight assists while Gabriela Maraz led the team with four steals. Sul Ross State shot 39.0 percent in the contest, 37.5 percent from beyond the arc and 52.9 percent from the free throw line.
UMHB will return to action Saturday, January 24th in a 1 p.m. game against Howard Payne University at the Mayborn Campus Center in Belton.
