CORSICANA – Ciara Luna knows all about concentrating on the mound.

After facing just 16 batters in Navarro’s 9-1 five-inning win over McLennan on Wednesday, Luna didn’t even know she had thrown a no-hitter.

“What? I had no idea,” said Luna, who gave up an unearned run after McLennan’s only base runner, who reached on an error, scored.

“I didn’t know I didn’t give up any hits,” Luna said. “I’m just concentrating and going from pitch to pitch and trusting my defense.”

Luna struck out seven and didn’t walk anyone to win the opener of the doubleheader Wednesday at Navarro’s Jesse and Lou Cummings Field. It was the first home game for the ‘Dawgs.

“I felt a lot more comfortable today, especially being at home, said Luna, who is now 2-1 for the Bulldogs, who are 2-5 for the season after losing Wednesday’s second game, 9-5.

Luna pitched pretty good in the first game,” Navarro Coach Jessica Karenke said. “Toward the middle of the game she really looked relaxed.”

Danielle Jetton hit a three-run homer and Catherine Alvarado went 2 for 3 and drove in four runs in the first game, and Alyssa Dotson had a two-run double in the fifth inning of the first game.

“She’s been swinging the bat well in practice, Karenke said of Jetton’s homer. Her home run put us on top and changed the momentum.”

Navarro got a home run from Logan Polasek in the second game and fought back to score three runs in the bottom of the seventh.

“We just came out flat in the second game,” Karenke said. “My big thing is we fought back. We never quit and got three runs in the seventh.

“I feel real good with the momentum we have going right now,” she said. “We struggled at the plate and defensively (in going 1-4 to start the season in the Galveston Tournament), but we are playing better.”
