The Lady Aggies (12-8, 9-2) shot 51.2 percent while limiting Tarleton (12-8, 5-6) to just 30.1 percent to win their fifth straight over the TexAnns, 65-62, at Wisdom Gym Saturday evening.
Cameron had to survive a career-high 26 points by Kathy Thomas. The senior guard had 23 in the second half, including 12 in the final 2:41 when she was 3-4 from the arc, hit a pull-up jumper from the left baseline and made a free throw.
The scoring barrage by Thomas was too little, too late, however, as Cameron had previously scored seven straight to turn a tie game into a 54-47 lead. The Lady Aggies eventually led 60-51, the largest advantage for either team.
Jazzmine Robinson scored 12 of her 14 in the second half including the first three points of Cameron’s decisive run. Robinson played only nine minutes in the opening half due to foul trouble. She was joined in double figures by Charron Montgomery with 15 and Jade Erl with 13.
Ikpeaku Iwobi was the only other Tarleton player in double figures with 10 points to go with 11 rebounds. It was the sophomore forward’s seventh double-double of the season.
Tarleton, which fell for the third time in four games, struggled all night with the quickness of the Lady Aggies, who consistently penetrated the defense. The TexAnns are now tied for fifth alongside Texas Woman’s in the LSC, while Cameron is tied for second with Midwestern State.
Tarleton led for only 19 seconds of the second half following a Meagan O’Dell 3-pointer that capped a 7-0 run for a 38-36 lead. Thomas started that rally, and Travanti Downes also had a basket.
The TexAnns shot just 24.3 percent in the first half and went into intermission trailing 28-23. Tarleton struggled to stop Lady Aggie penetration on one end, and couldn’t finish consistently in the paint at the other.
Cameron broke a 14-14 tie on a layup with a foul by Cristina Soriano, who also knocked down the ensuing free throw with 8:26 remaining in the half.
