WACO – Heather Stearns delivered a strong pitching performance helping the No. 10 Baylor Bears (5-0) to a 3-0 victory over Stephen F. Austin (2-3) in the Fairfield Inn & Suites North Getterman Classic Championship Sunday. Stearns struck out 11, allowed just one hit and walked none in six innings of work to give Baylor its third-straight Getterman Classic championship.
Robin Landrith singled for Baylor’s only RBI in the second inning as Kina Cummings, a pinch runner for Sarah Smith that doubled, scored the game’s first run. Baylor scored two runs on errant throws from SFA later in the inning for a 3-0 cushion.
Stearns had 10 strikeouts through five innings, and in the sixth, the LadyJacks’ Taylor Vick provided SFA’s first base runner when she reached on an error. After a fielder’s choice to retire Vick, Stearns induced a ground out for the second out before Heather Hollingsworth singled up the middle with two outs to put runners on the corners. Stearns ended the threat by striking out Katelyn Standley to end the inning, and Brooke Seneshenpitched a scoreless seventh for BU.
The Lady Bears have won 9 out of 14 Getterman Classic championships, and Wichita State won the consolation game Sunday over TAMCC, 9-8.
Baylor heads to Natchitoches, La. to play Northwestern State and Jackson State twice apiece Feb. 14-15.
