AUSTIN – The Tarleton State Tennis team dropped an in-region match 8-1 Thursday afternoon to St. Edward’s at the Strohmeyer Courts in Austin.

“St. Edwards is a very good team, but we just did not perform well today,” said head coach Lance Drake. “It was disappointing because we were making progress in our doubles play, but today we struggled to execute. We really didn’t give ourselves a chance. Going down 3-0 to a good team is a difficult challenge to come back from.”

In singles play, Luiza Ferraro-Adas came away with the lone win in the No. 3 match defeating Rafaela Haegeie (4-6, 6-3, 1-0). Freshmen Erika Richarme (6-3, 3-6, 0-1) and Ashleigh Elward (1-6, 3-6) dropped the No. 1 and No. 2 matches despite valiant efforts.

“On a positive note, it was a good effort by the top half of our singles lineup today,” added Drake. “They were very competitive matches. Luiza Ferraro-Adas pulled out a tough singles match in the third set. Erika took one of the top players in the region to the very end and was on the cusp of winning her match, but let it slip away from her in the end.”

Ellie Stevens (0-6, 0-6), Gabriella Jansson (0-6, 3-6) and Ariadna Cabezas-Marti (1-6, 2-6) dropped the No. 4, 5 and 6 matches, respectively.

Doubles play would see No. 1 pair of Elward and Ferrar-Adas and the No. 2 pair of Stevens and Jansson drop matches of identical 2-8 scores. Cabezas-Marti and Richarme would fall 4-8 in the No. 3 pair match.

“We will have to regroup, learn from this loss and strive to get better as we have some big regional matches next weekend in Albuquerque, NM.”

Tarleton will face Metro State, Colorado Mesa and Western New Mexico in the New Mexico Tournament February 27-28.
